Kieron Pollard scored 94 in just 55 balls, Ireland v West Indies, Group B, World Cup, Mohali, March 11, 2011
West Indies opener Devon Smith made a maiden century whereas Kieron Pollard played fiery shots to make West Indies to elevated score 275 which Ireland could not make in chasing of 275 before West Indian bowlers. West Indies achieved their third win in their four games to put themselves for quarter-final spot. Ireland kept fighting even when hopes of a victory were vanished, reducing the line of defeat to 44 runs.
The choice to replace the injured Chris Gayle with bowling all-rounder Andre Russell destined West Indies had a long tail. Ireland would have been the happier side when West Indies crawled to 142 for 3 by the 35th over. The batsmen gambled by taking the batting Powerplay then; a wicket at that stage could have scupper the innings, but Ireland couldn't make the vital breakthrough and were helpless as the power of Pollard helped ransack 55 runs in five over to shift the stability of the game.
