Stuart Broad took wicket of Hashim Amla as England fought hard with the ball, England v South Africa, Group B, World Cup, Chennai, March 6, 2011
What a contest! English team produced jerky results as first win over Netherlands; second game was tied with India, lost third match with Ireland and today, created thrill for cricket fans after snatched the victory from South Africa by just 6 runs after low scored by English outfit. At one stage in South Africa's chasing, they were 63 for no loss when Amla and Smith were striking all over the ground, but English bowlers took all 10 wickets in just 102 runs through a combination of spin, reverse swing, insistence and the never-say-attitude which is such a mannerism of this team, with Stuart Broad sealing the victory with two wickets in four balls after Dale Steyn's 31-ball 20 had taken his team close to the winning line.
What will please Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower was that it was the much-maligned attack that won the match as Stuart Broad took 4 for 15, Anderson produced a overwhelming burst of reverse swing shortly before the 34-over ball change and Swann bowled with guile and craft to set up the prospect of victory. It means there would be no need to put 300+ runs on the board, just keep a good line & length bowling action. England will now concentrate on next game with Bangladesh on 11th March at Chittagong.
