Abdul Razzaq celebrates after bowled out Michael Clarke, Australia v Pakistan, Group A, World Cup 2011, Colombo, March 19, 2011
Pakistan finally broke the winning streak of 34 consecutive wins for Australia in World Cup tournaments as they sealed a four wicket victory in a nerve thrilling contest over World Champions Australia in Colombo. Pakistan assured top spot in Group A. 176 was the lowest total for Australia in a World Cup since 1992. Umar Akmal and Abdul Razzaq impelled Pakistan to a great victory despite Brett Lee's potent bowling spells. Pakistan was the last team which defeated Australia in World Cup 1999 at headingly before starting the winning streak of 34 consecutive matches of World Cup tournament.
After Australian batting subsided with 20 balls spare, Australia's only probability was to bowl Pakistan out, but in the event it required Lee himself to do most of the scratch. He removed both openers in a scorching new-ball burst before returning to assert Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq with consecutive deliveries in 23rd over, leaving Pakistan trembling on 98 for 4. However, not enough runs on the board for Aussies to defend, Mitchell Johnson had Asad Shafiq taken at slip off the glove for a collected 46 and Shahid Afridi brainlessly carved to long-on against Jason Krejza. Pakistan would play in quarter-final match with the side at 4th spot of Group B.
