Upul Tharanga passed his hundred with the emphatic boundary as he and Tillakaratne Dilshan sealed an blistering triumph, Sri Lanka vs England, 4th Quarter-Final, ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, Colombo, March 26 2011
Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga twin hundreds set an emphatic win over chaotic England to guide to their home semi-final with New Zealand on 29th March. Setting a testing total of 229 at the Premadasa Stadium by visitors, Sri Lankan openers set about proving that history is malarkey as they sauntered to victory of 10 wickets with 63 balls to spare. Only eight times in forty nine 50-over format internationals contests at the venue had a team batting second chased 230 or more for triumph.
Such was Sri Lanka's supremacy that the match was able to finish in absurdly contrived scenes, as Dilshan, who had already reached his landmark of hundred cut for four off Graeme Swann - set about steering his partner to his own hundred. With seven runs still needed and Tharanga on 98, Dilshan fortuitously carved Swann clean through the covers, and was scowling his apologies before the ball had crossed the rope. Dilshan responded with two of the most overstated forward defenses he has ever played, Tharanga finished the game three balls into Chris Tremlett's following over, with a flat-footed swipe through the off-side.
The statistics described an apologetic tale for England. They managed only 12 fours in the whole of their 50 over quota, two of which were scored by Jonathan Trott, whose 86 from 115 balls was his fifth half-century in his seven innings, as he became the first batsman to pass 400 runs in this World Cup tournament. Eoin Morgan provided some impulsion with a 55-ball 50, but the batting Power-play once again cracked their momentum, as they were restricted to 23 runs and two vital wickets in their five over of fielding restrictions. Sri Lanka by contrast thumped 22 fours and three sixes in less than 40 over.
