Continous downpours in Colombo abandoned the game in 33rd over, Sri Lanka v Australia, Group A, World Cup 2011, Colombo, March 5, 2011
Persistent downpours forced the game to be abandoned as Kumara Sangakkara's outfit reached 146 for 3 in 32.5 over. There would a tough scramble of the tournament as both group A teams Australia and Sri Lanka were expected to be rocking in Colombo. Australia's pacers attacked early on the burly batting lineup of co-hosts of World Cup and they lost their third wicket on 75 runs in 16th over. Skipper Sangakkara took the responsibility and led from the front, but continual heavy showers ruined all the plans of Sri Lankan captain.
As Sri Lanka would be going in tough row, over 250 would be anticipated from their side, Samaraweera stood by his captain Sangakkara and were building good stand over visitors. Jayawardene had added 44 runs with his captain and they looked in immense touch and control. If Sangakkara tried to blow through the line, Jayawardene looked to stroke through the covers; if Sangakkara dabbed to the off, Mahela nudged to the leg, and both ran the singles well. The run-rate wasn't too high but Sri Lanka looked to be in control as the track was increasingly showing signs of aiding turn and bounce.
2 points for match would be shared between two and each got 1 point. Australia would play their fourth game with Kenya on 13th March whereas Sri Lankans would get a chance of winning against Zimbabwe on 10th March.
