Muttiah Muralitharan appeals before giving his out for lbw against Ross Taylor, New Zealand v Sri Lanka, Group A, World Cup 2011, Mumbai, March 18, 2011
Sri Lanka's old card mingled to elevate his side to Group A as Sri Lanka defeated New Zealand by 112-runs in Mumbai. Kumar Sangakkara secured a maiden century in 50-over format match since June 2008. Mahela Jayawardene and skipper Sangakkara shared 145-runs in vital third wicket stand which propelled Sri Lanka up to 265 before Muralitharan delivered a disastrous 8-over spell to trounce Kiwis with 4 for 25.

New Zealand, though, will lament their calamity when Jayawardene was reprieved at a critical jiffy. Sri Lanka had lost both openers and were struggling to get on top of the New Zealand spinners when, in the 24th over, Jayawardene chipped a return catch to Nathan McCullum.
It went squat to McCullum's right and the bowler dived full-length to scrape the ball centimeters off the turf. The batsman stood his ground and the decision was sent to TV umpire. Side-on replays seemed to clearly show McCullum's fingers under the ball but a front-on shot, as it so often does, created doubt that the third umpire, Amiesh Saheba, ruled on. Before then Jayawardene had knotted for 50 deliveries to build 26 but silkily added a auxiliary 40 at a run a ball and Sri Lanka never looked back. Both teams already qualified for quarter-finals.
